1. Fertilization on demand is crucial for bluegrass after it comes out of dormancy in the summer. As the weather changes, bluegrass starts to grow rapidly, and second-generation buds along with flower buds begin to emerge. However, without a steady supply of nutrients, the growth of bluegrass will be hindered, and the formation of flower buds becomes just empty promises. Therefore, proper fertilization is essential. While I consider myself a purist and prefer natural methods, I do use mountain humus, which already contains the necessary nutrients for bluegrass growth. However, after more than a year of planting, I didn’t apply any additional fertilizer. It's important to note that fertilizing should not be done uniformly—dosages must be adjusted based on the specific conditions of each plant.
2. Implementing the “Autumn Retirement†policy is vital due to reduced rainfall and lower humidity during autumn. In addition to maintaining moisture in the orchid pot, it’s equally important to keep the environment within the orchid house humid. I often use water curtains, but other methods like humidifiers, water basins under the shelves, or even misting the floor can also help. The choice of method depends on the specific conditions of each orchid.
3. Providing adequate light is key, especially for late autumn buds. With greater temperature differences between day and night, I allow bluegrass to receive sunlight throughout the day except at noon when the sun is strongest. I believe that increasing light exposure in autumn helps promote healthy seedlings and improves the chances of stronger growth next year.
4. Enhancing ventilation and preventing pests and diseases are critical steps. During summer and autumn, I regularly ventilate the area and use insecticides like Lancang to sterilize and prevent infestations. Taking preventive measures is essential to avoid the spread of diseases and maintain the health of the plants.
5. Proper repotting is necessary for bluegrass that has been growing for over two years. When repotting, it’s important to replace the growing medium and ensure that the roots are not damaged. Some orchid seedlings may become crowded, so removing excess plants helps maintain healthy growth. However, it's crucial to protect any wounds during the process. Each orchid should be handled carefully, as different species may require different approaches.
