Sub-dogs typically nurse their puppies five times a day during the first few weeks. By the time the pups are 14 days old, they begin to eat solid food four times a day. At around three weeks of age, the mother dog starts introducing more solid food into their diet. She eats the food first, partially digests it, and then regurgitates it for her puppies to consume. By six weeks, the puppies are ready to be weaned and can start eating on their own. Before weaning, it's important to gradually introduce milk or soft foods, such as a small amount of porridge mixed with fresh milk or broth.
The sub-dog should be trained to eat from a bowl before being separated from the mother. After a few training sessions, it's best to keep them apart to prevent them from trying to nurse again. Once weaned, the puppy will grow quickly, so their diet should contain more than 40% protein. From birth to 10 weeks, feed them four to five times a day in smaller portions to avoid overeating. As they grow older, between 10 and 11 weeks, reduce the number of meals to three or four per day while keeping the total amount consistent. Over time, continue to decrease the frequency of feedings and increase the portion sizes accordingly.
For adult dogs, there are various feeding methods available. However, there are some key considerations to keep in mind. First, once you choose a feeding routine, avoid making sudden changes unless necessary. Second, while raw meat and uncooked diets can promote faster growth and better reproductive health, cooked food is generally safer and helps reduce the risk of illness. Third, when feeding meat-based diets, it’s beneficial to add bone meal to ensure proper calcium intake. Fourth, always keep the food and water clean and free from contamination. Lastly, if your dog refuses to eat, take the time to investigate the cause—whether it's due to stress, illness, or simply a change in preference—and address it promptly to maintain their health and well-being.
