Slower growth in pork prices, experts predict limited gains before the Spring Festival

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, December 27th, After pork prices fell for two consecutive months, speculation that there may be a sharp rebound before the Spring Festival has aroused widespread concern in the society. According to the Xinhua News Agency’s national price monitoring system for agricultural and sideline products and agricultural materials, although the national pork price has rebounded for the third consecutive week this week, the increase has slowed slightly, and pig prices in some southern provinces, regions and cities have even declined. Experts believe that due to the current abundant supply, it is expected that there will be limited gains before the Spring Festival.

According to monitoring, compared with last week (December 12-18, the same below), this week (December 19-25, the same below), the national live pig acquisition week average price rose 0.7%, or increase from last week Reduced 0.2% to 8.79 yuan per catty. Of the 30 monitored provinces, municipalities, and districts (without monitoring points in Tibet), 20 prices have risen, 8 prices have dropped, and prices have remained flat. Among them, most of the provinces and cities with rising prices have risen within 2%.

The reporter learned from the interview that the rise in the pig price was mainly affected by factors such as increased demand. “The continuous fall in the previous period has touched the bottom of the price. With the arrival of the traditional consumer season, especially the arrival of New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, the price of pork has risen as expected,” said Jing Jizhong, chief editor of Pignet.com.

According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, the national average live pig price was 17.28 yuan/kg in the third week of December (acquisition date was December 21st), which was 1.3% higher than last week.

“The increase in demand is the main reason for the recent increase in the price of pigs. However, due to the higher enthusiasm of pig owners in the past few months, the survival rate of piglets has increased, and the supply of live pigs is relatively abundant. In addition, pork imports have increased month after month since September. It is expected that the price of pigs will rise before the Spring Festival, but the increase will not be much," said Wang Xiaoling, an economic analyst at Xinhua News Agency.
