In autumn and winter, temperature fluctuations become more pronounced, both in daily and nightly variations. To ensure a comfortable and warm environment for the chickens, improve their productivity, and reduce disease occurrences, it's essential to carefully manage temperature, humidity, and ventilation.
The indoor temperature should be kept between 18°C and 23°C, with a minimum of 15°C. On windy days, adjust the tarpaulin by partially or fully opening it depending on the outside temperature to avoid sudden drops inside the house. Adjust the air inlet size daily based on weather conditions and the flock’s behavior. Secure the air inlet firmly with wire or rope to the plastic sheet and wooden panels, ensuring that the wind blows upward rather than directly onto the chickens. This helps prevent cold stress and related diseases. Avoid opening the windscreen near the temperature controller to prevent cold air from directly hitting the sensor. Don’t open the exhaust fan unless necessary, as this can lead to poor air quality. When installing a timer-controlled exhaust fan, make sure the louvers are intact and avoid placing them facing north. Before winter, clean the heater thoroughly and align the louvers properly when first turning it on, so the warm air spreads evenly throughout the shed. Avoid opening both the workshop door and chicken house door at the same time to prevent cold drafts. Observe the chickens daily—if they are huddled on the perches with fluffed-up feathers, it indicates the house is too cold. Adjust the air inlet, seal any leaks, and prevent stress to avoid cold-related illnesses. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and take preventive measures in advance.
During autumn and winter, ventilation should focus on fresh air with a slower airflow. Before winter, check and repair areas where cold air might enter, especially around the exhaust fan, to prevent localized cold spots and poor ventilation. If the ammonia smell becomes strong, increase the indoor temperature first before boosting ventilation. In the morning, if the air is stale, gradually increase ventilation, ideally during the warmer midday hours. Shorter but more frequent ventilation periods are better. Never leave any dead corners unventilated. If you plan to add more fans, monitor the flock closely after the change to ensure no negative reactions occur.
Before winter, pay attention to humidity levels. The litter tends to be drier, and regular spraying or disinfection is often needed. If there is water under the perches, drain it during warmer autumn days and sprinkle with lime powder. Once the room temperature is suitable, increase ventilation. Adjust the water pressure on the nipple drinkers to less than 10 cm, or set the drinking trough water level below 1 cm. Regularly inspect the drinking lines. Replace or fix any leaking joints immediately. Address water leaks in the drinking fountains promptly to prevent excessive ammonia buildup, which can harm the chickens' health.
