Purple fungus is not only rich in nutrients and offers a variety of culinary options, but it also exhibits strong adaptability and high productivity. Cultivating corn cobs for purple fungus requires careful attention to several key steps:
First, the corn cobs used as cultivation material are high in sugars, making them prone to mold and spoilage. Therefore, they should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated area. Before use, they should be crushed into bean-sized pieces to ensure even moisture absorption during the preparation process.
The culture formula typically includes 73% corn cob, 25% cotton husk, 1% sucrose, 1% gypsum powder, and water at 130% to 140% of the dry material weight. When preparing the substrate, mix the corn cobs and cotton husks thoroughly, then add water and let the mixture soak overnight. This allows the materials to absorb enough moisture and ensures proper mixing of all ingredients.
For sterilization, use 17 x 35 cm polyethylene bags. Insert a thin wire through the top of the bag to create an opening, then fill it with the prepared mixture from the bottom, compacting it slightly without over-tightening. Each bag can hold about 1.5 kg of wet substrate. Once filled, the bags are ready for sterilization. Typically, this is done using a steamer, and the process should last at least 10 hours after the temperature reaches 100°C.
After sterilization, allow the bags to cool down to around 30°C before inoculation. The two-head inoculation method is simple and effective. It’s essential to maintain aseptic conditions during this stage. Once inoculated, place the bags on a rack in the culture room. As the mycelium grows to about 5 cm, loosen the two strings on the bag slightly to allow a small amount of air to enter, which helps promote healthy mycelial growth. After approximately 25 to 30 days, the entire bag will be fully colonized by the mycelium.
To cover the fruiting bodies, build a 1.8-meter-high ear shelter in a well-ventilated and well-drained area. Inside the shelter, create a 1-meter-wide bed or trampoline. Once the mycelium is fully grown, remove the plastic bags and lay the mycelium blocks flat on the surface. Cover them with 1 to 2 cm of warm soil and then place a curved plastic film over the top to maintain humidity and warmth. Within 2 to 3 days, the mycelium will start to penetrate the soil. By day 10 to 12, the first fruiting bodies will begin to emerge. At this point, remove the plastic film and ventilate both ends. The ears will mature within 10 to 15 days. After harvesting the first batch, stop watering and re-cover the bed with the film to prevent further mycelial regrowth. Repeat the same process when the second flush appears. Usually, three harvests can be obtained in total.
This detailed approach ensures optimal growth and maximum yield of purple fungus, making it a rewarding and sustainable cultivation project.
