Autumn and winter should add vitamins to hens

As the seasons transition from late autumn to winter, it becomes an ideal time for hatching chicks. To ensure a higher hatching and survival rate and to produce strong, healthy chickens, it's essential to focus on the nutrition of breeding hens, particularly the inclusion of vitamin B12 in their diet. Vitamin B12, also known as the anti-anemia vitamin, is unique because it contains 4.5% cobalt, making it the only vitamin that includes a metal element. Its primary function is to enhance the chicken’s ability to produce blood cells, increasing both hemoglobin and red blood cell counts, which supports overall blood formation. Additionally, vitamin B12 plays a key role in protein synthesis, allowing chickens to utilize amino acids more efficiently. This not only aids in their growth and development but also improves egg production and quality. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to significant issues. Hens may experience reduced egg production, and in severe cases, the eggs laid may lose their ability to hatch altogether. Even if some eggs do hatch, the resulting chicks often have low vitality, poor development, and a very low survival rate. Therefore, it's crucial to include an appropriate amount of vitamin B12 in the feed for laying hens, chicks, and broilers to meet their nutritional needs throughout different growth stages. Natural sources of vitamin B12 include fishmeal, blood meal, meat and bone meal, peanut cake, and certain antibiotic feeds. By incorporating these ingredients into regular feeding routines, poultry farmers can effectively prevent vitamin B12 deficiencies and support the health and productivity of their flocks. Ensuring adequate vitamin B12 intake during the colder months is especially important, as it helps maintain optimal performance and resilience in the birds.
