It typically grows between 35–65 cm tall, with cylindrical, yellowish-white rhizomes that are fleshy and have a diameter of 0.5–1.5 cm. Each year, a single stem emerges from the base of the underground rhizome. The rhizomes feature distinct nodes, long internodes, and densely fibrous roots. The stems are simple, leaning, smooth, and ribbed. Leaves are alternate, short-petiolate or nearly sessile, leathery, elliptic or ovate-oblong in shape, with a blunt or pointed tip, and a wedge-shaped base. The upper surface is green, while the underside is grayish-white, sometimes with papillae on the veins. Flowers are axillary, usually one or two per stem, with greenish-white tepals and six lobes at the tip. The plant has six stamens, flat filaments, and oblong yellow anthers. The ovary is superior, with three chambers and three stigma heads. The fruit is a spherical berry that turns purple-black when mature. Flowering occurs from June to July, and fruiting takes place from July to September. Yuzhu thrives in cool, moist, and shaded environments. It is cold-resistant and highly resilient, growing in rocky crevices, mountainous wetlands, under forests, and in deciduous woodlands. It prefers deep, well-drained, fertile sandy loam or red soil. It is suitable for planting on hillsides but not on overly compacted or loose soils. Avoid continuous cropping; it is best to rotate with crops like corn or peanuts. Cultivation practices include planting in late March or early October. After harvesting, the rhizomes are stored at 0–5°C for 20–30 days to break dormancy. Seed blocks are dried to prevent rot and promote sprouting. High-quality rhizomes—glossy, white, tender, and free from damage—are selected for planting. Ridges are set up in a north-south orientation, with spacing of 30–40 cm between rows and 10–15 cm between plants. Planting densities vary depending on fertility levels: 10,000 to 15,000 per acre. Field management involves shading during seedling stages to reduce light intensity and temperature, which helps protect young plants. Watering should be done carefully, avoiding overwatering. Fertilization is applied based on growth stages, with nitrogen-rich fertilizers used during the seedling stage and organic matter or compound fertilizers during the vigorous growth phase. Weeding is essential, often using herbicides like ethalfluralin. Soil cultivation should be shallow to avoid damaging the shallow root system. Pest control includes managing leaf spot, purple spot, and brown spot diseases, as well as controlling cockroaches using both chemical and cultural methods. Harvesting occurs in spring before budding or in autumn after the foliage yellows and dies. Before harvest, watering is done to soften the soil for easier digging.
