The morning arrived with a cool, gray fog—something I had grown accustomed to by now. Christopher gave me a loving glance as I woke up. Another exciting adventure was about to begin.
Since the destination today was too far and too high to reach on foot, we needed another way to get there. We went to rent a car, and the hotel made everything easy for us. As we drove, we crossed The Bridge, a structure that couldn’t be hidden by the thick cloud cover above.
But this time, it didn’t feel as big or eerie as before. Now, we were safely inside a 3000-pound metal shell.
We crossed the bridge, feeling safe and secure. The adventure was just beginning. As we climbed higher, the winding roads took us along the mountain, surrounded by dense greenery. If the sun had shown through, I wouldn’t have known. The trees were too thick.
I’m glad I wasn’t driving—it would’ve taken us much longer to get where we were going. All those twists and turns would’ve forced me to drive extremely slowly, but Christopher was confident behind the wheel. That made me feel better too. When the corners got sharp, I’d grip his hand tightly, and he’d smile back at me.
At times, when we rounded a curve, we caught glimpses of the cliff below and the city in the distance. It was breathtaking, even through the fog. The sun hadn’t fully come out yet, maybe because it was still early.
As we reached Muir Woods, the towering trees seemed to stretch endlessly overhead. We drove until we could go no further, and there it was—the trail we had been looking for.
Equipped with hiking shoes, hats, and gloves to fight off the chill, we set off on foot.
It felt like we were surrounded by a sea of green. Everything was covered in moss, and the air was damp. But it was absolutely beautiful.
Looking around, it felt like we had stepped into another world, far removed from the fast-paced life we had left behind. We stood in each other’s arms, breathing in the fresh air, enjoying the silence. The sky peeked through the treetops, playing hide-and-seek with us. A family of deer passed by quietly, heading toward a nearby stream. We simply took in the peace.
It was just us and nature. We walked, climbed, and mostly followed the path, which sometimes widened, sometimes narrowed. We crossed brooks and rivers, moving forward without a plan or interruptions.
We found massive trees that were hollow enough to climb into. So we did—after checking for animals and spiders first. There was nothing to worry about, so we entered.
We must have been in the forest for a while, because the air began to warm slightly. I heard a small laugh, which made me happy. I never stay as warm as Christopher does. With the warmth came something else, right?
Then we saw it—the sunlight breaking through the tall trees. It was a stunning sight.
We knew we had been there for a while, even though time had flown by effortlessly. It was time to find our way back out of the woods.
