The morning arrived with a cool, gray fog—something I had grown accustomed to by now. Christopher gave me a loving glance as I woke up. Another journey was about to begin.
Since the destination we were heading to was too far and too high to reach on foot, we needed a different way to get there. We went to rent a car, and the hotel handled everything for us. It was surprisingly easy, and when we arrived, we were at the front of the line. It almost felt awkward to look around. Although the place wasn’t crowded on this holiday, the few people who were there seemed to be watching us. To our surprise, we were upgraded to a convertible. It wasn’t necessary in my opinion—after all, it wasn’t warm enough to enjoy it. Still, a little bit of excitement was hard to resist. What if it did get warm? Maybe, but I still held onto hope.
As we drove, we had to cross The Bridge. A structure that couldn’t be hidden by the thick cloud-covered sky.
But this time, it didn’t seem as big or eerie as before. Now that we were inside a 3000-pound metal shell, it felt more like a normal part of the drive.
We crossed the bridge safely, and the adventure was just beginning. We climbed higher and higher, winding through the mountain covered in lush greenery. If the sun was shining, I wouldn’t have known—it was too dark under the dense canopy of trees.
I’m glad I wasn’t driving. The twists and turns would’ve made me go much slower than we were moving. Christopher, on the other hand, seemed confident, and that made me feel more relaxed too. I’d grab his free hand whenever the corners got sharp, and I could see a smile form on his lips and his eyes light up.
At times, as we rounded a bend, we caught glimpses of the cliff beside us and the city below. It was breathtaking, even through the fog. The sun hadn’t fully emerged yet, maybe it was just too early in the day.
As we approached Muir Woods, the trees grew taller and taller overhead. We drove until we could drive no further, and there it was—the trail we were looking for.
Suiting up in hiking boots, hats, and gloves to keep the chill at bay, we set off on foot.
It felt like we were surrounded by a sea of green. Everything was covered in moss, and the air was damp. But it was beautiful, serene, and peaceful.
Looking around, it felt like we had stepped into another world, completely cut off from the fast-paced life of the city. We stood in each other’s arms, breathing in the fresh air, and enjoying the silence. The sky peeked through the treetops, and a family of deer quietly passed by, heading toward a nearby stream. We just soaked in the calm and beauty of the moment.
It was just us and nature. We walked, we climbed, and we mostly followed the path, which sometimes widened, sometimes narrowed. We crossed streams, climbed over rocks, and moved forward without any plans or interruptions.
We found a massive tree that was hollow enough to climb into. So we did—after checking for animals and spiders first. There was nothing to worry about, so we entered.
We must have been in the forest for a while because the air started to feel warmer. I heard a small laugh, and it made me happy. I never stay as warm as Christopher does. With the warmth came something else, right?
Then we saw it—the sunlight breaking through the towering trees. It was a magical sight.
We knew we had been there for a long time, though time had slipped away so easily. It was time to find our way back out of the woods.
Goodbye, Muir Woods. It was a delightful escape.
