Shelter: Antifreeze Six Measures

To protect plants from cold damage, antifreeze can be applied using a spraying or brushing method. It is recommended to use 400–600 times the volume of liquid when spraying. Applying the solution during the early stages of plant growth and focusing on leaves, flowers, and buds can effectively prevent frost and cold stress. Before cold air arrives, it’s advisable to light smoke around the greenhouse to reduce heat loss. However, avoid using firewood inside the shed for heating, as the smoke from burning stalks can be harmful to the crops. Instead, consider using safe alternatives that don’t emit toxic fumes. Covering the area around the greenhouse with straw or corn stalks can raise the internal temperature by 1–2°C. Adding a layer of plastic film over the existing structure helps block snow and improves insulation, keeping the temperature between 2–3°C. Regularly cleaning the film also enhances light penetration, which in turn increases heat absorption and improves overall conditions inside the greenhouse. Another effective method is to add black materials to the ground. For example, sprinkling fine bituminous coal or mixing carbon black with water and spraying it on the floor can darken the surface, acting like a solar collector. This technique can raise the greenhouse temperature by 2–3°C, helping plants thrive even in colder weather. Using a double-layered cover film beneath the drop-proof film and placing an additional layer over the support wires creates an insulating air gap. This significantly improves thermal retention and helps maintain a warmer environment inside the greenhouse. Finally, hanging a reflective curtain on the back wall of the greenhouse can help retain heat. Using a metal-coated plastic film or aluminum foil, suspended every 2–3 meters, reduces heat loss and increases the temperature by 2–3°C. This not only improves warmth but also enhances lighting, which supports better growth and development of vegetables.
