Strawberry ground cover cultivation management

Straw mulching with grass is an effective method for growing strawberries. It helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weed growth. Additionally, it acts as a protective layer, preventing the berries from touching the ground or rotting, which ultimately improves both yield and fruit quality. To apply this method, use materials like wheat straw, corn stalks, or rice straw. Before covering, insert the grass into the soil to a depth of 5–10 cm, ensuring good contact with the ground. Spread the mulch evenly between the rows of strawberries, keeping a thickness of about 3 cm. Another common technique is plastic film mulching, widely used in both open fields and protected cultivation. The film helps maintain warmth and moisture, promotes the breakdown of organic matter in the soil, and supports better nutrient absorption by seedlings. It also encourages root development and above-ground growth, leading to higher yields and improved fruit quality. However, careful management is required when using plastic film. In northern regions where late frosts are common, applying the film too early can expose flowers to frost damage. In southern areas with high temperatures during the ripening period, the fruit may suffer from sunburn if not properly managed. Additionally, during the rainy season, it's important to manage the plants by removing runners, fertilizing the field, and promptly removing the cover after harvest to avoid waterlogging and disease.
