From late August to early September, early and mid-season citrus varieties began showing signs of partial yellowing and fruit drop. In the entire city, the average fruit retention rate in orange orchards stood at 1.7%, covering approximately 10% of the total planting area. The severity of infestation varied significantly, with some orchards reporting a high rate of affected fruits ranging from 7.3% to as much as 55%. To protect the progress made in integrated pest management, local officials and residents must act swiftly. It is crucial to effectively collect and manage fruit fly-infested fruits in order to reduce the number of overwintering pests.
Insect fruit processing technology and guidelines:
1. Strengthen organizational leadership in villages and farms where large fruit flies are prevalent. Local leaders should take charge of organizing and supervising the collection and treatment of infested fruits. They should hold meetings with citrus farmers, publicize the importance of pest control, demonstrate effective methods, and encourage immediate action to address the issue.
2. Fruit collection and treatment method: Starting from mid-September, when fruits begin to turn yellow and become more visible, it's important to inspect every three days. All fallen or infested fruits on the ground should be collected and removed from the trees. These should then be placed into pre-dug pits (1.5–2 meters deep) to prevent larvae from rotting in the orchard. After harvesting, highly toxic pesticides should be applied directly to the pit, covered with plastic sheeting, and finally buried under 30–40 cm of soil. For scattered infestations, boiling is also an effective option.
3. Infested fruits and fruit flies must not be discarded in forests, ditches, or ponds, as this can accelerate the spread of the pest and lead to serious problems. Fruits infected with Bactrocera dorsalis must not be sold or transported in the market. Any such violations will result in fines exceeding 5,000 yuan, and all seized goods will be destroyed.
