Native to the Mississippi River region in the United States. The Brazilian emerald turtle has a flat, round shell with a large head and slightly thick neck. Its eyes are prominent, and it features black and white stripes on its neck and body. Each ear has an oval red marking. The carapace has a slight camel-back shape, while the plastron is straight with black square or petal-like patterns. The back shows a blue and dark green belt that now appears as a geometric pattern, and the marginal scutes resemble butterfly wings. These turtles are lively, quick, and have strong environmental adaptability. They are sensitive to noise and dirty conditions. Their diet is varied and omnivorous.
The Brazilian green turtle is an oviparous species. Mating occurs from late May to August, and egg-laying takes place between June and September. They can lay 3 to 4 clutches per year, with each clutch containing about 45 eggs, and up to 90 eggs in some cases. Hatchlings typically emerge after 50 to 70 days at temperatures of 24 to 25°C.
This species serves multiple purposes—food, medicine, and ornamental value. It’s a popular pet due to its vibrant colors and unique appearance. However, proper care and a clean environment are essential for its health and longevity. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced reptile keeper, the Brazilian emerald turtle is a fascinating and rewarding companion.
