How to prevent moldy fish meal poisoning?

(1) Diagnosis: The increased use of fish meal in quail feed has led to a higher likelihood of using moldy fish meal, which can cause poisoning. The causes of poisoning include: first, the growth of mold, which produces harmful metabolites that lead to illness; second, contamination by Salmonella, resulting in toxic effects and disease. Affected quails may show symptoms such as loss of appetite, reduced activity, sitting with their heads lowered, and sometimes brownish feces due to digestive issues. Severe cases often result in dehydration. Young chicks experience slow growth and development, while adult quails suffer from a significant drop in egg production, weight loss, and in some cases, death. Upon autopsy, the birds exhibit weight loss, pale yellow fat in the abdomen, pericardial effusion, enlarged livers with a yellowish color, soft texture, and signs of bleeding or shrinkage. The gastrointestinal mucosa is damaged, with areas of bleeding, and the ceca show ulcers and erosion. (2) Prevention: To avoid poisoning, it's essential to pay close attention to the quality of fish meal and store it properly. During summer, it should be kept away from high temperatures, moisture, and oxidation. If the fish meal appears pink or has an unusual odor, it should not be used. If poisoning is suspected, immediately stop feeding the contaminated fish meal and replace it with fresh compound feed. Nystatin is a specific treatment for this condition, with a recommended daily dosage of 0.5 to 1 milligram per quail chick. It should be mixed into the feed and administered evenly. In severe cases, the dosage can be increased slightly, and the medication can be given via oral drip for 3 to 5 days. To combat dehydration, support detoxification, and strengthen immunity, oral rehydration salts and sugar can also be provided to the affected birds. Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to preventing further losses and ensuring the health of the flock.
