Lion tail

Leonotis leonurus, commonly known as Lion's Ear or Lion's Tail, is a striking ornamental plant native to South Africa. This perennial shrub thrives in warm, humid, and sunny conditions, though it can tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and is not suited for cold climates. The plant typically grows between 0.7 to 1.5 meters tall, with densely hairy stems and opposite, lance-shaped to oblanceolate leaves that have coarse serrations along the edges. Its most distinctive feature is the vibrant inflorescence, which resembles a lion’s tail—composed of yellow-green calyces and bright orange or orange-red corollas. Flowering occurs from October to December, making it a popular choice for late-season color. Propagation is usually done through cuttings or seeds. In northern China, it is often grown in pots, while in southern regions, it is used as a ground cover or in flower beds. When cultivating Leonotis leonurus, several key considerations should be taken into account. First, propagation via cuttings is highly effective. In spring, take semi-woody stem cuttings and place them in a loose, well-draining medium. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged to encourage rooting, which typically has a high success rate. Once rooted, transplant the cuttings into containers. Second, proper pruning and fertilization are essential. The plant grows quickly, so applying a diluted compost tea every 15 days during the growing season helps maintain its health. Watering should be done when the soil is dry, avoiding overwatering, as the plant is sensitive to wet conditions. Pruning 1–2 times during the growing season encourages bushier growth and more flowers. Third, light and humidity management play a crucial role. As a short-day plant, Leonotis leonurus will bloom in winter if nighttime temperatures remain above 10°C. For flowering outside of this period, it may need to be shaded to simulate shorter daylight hours. Additionally, it requires good air circulation and should be placed in partial shade after being moved outdoors. In colder regions, it is advisable to prune back the branches before winter and bring the plants indoors to a greenhouse for protection.
