Additionally, insufficient winter protection can result in cold injury, which also contributes to the development of leaf spot disease. The disease typically appears between April and October, with the most severe damage occurring from August to September.
There are two main approaches to managing and treating this issue: cultural control and chemical treatment.
Cultural management plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of the disease. It is recommended to use well-drained, loose, and fertile acidic sandy loam for planting. Applying an appropriate amount of cake fertilizer and regularly watering with a 0.5% ferrous sulfate solution can help improve plant health. In winter, it's important to implement early cold protection measures. Once new leaves emerge in spring, promptly remove old and diseased leaves to reduce the risk of infection.
For chemical control, it is best to start treatment at the early stage of the disease. Spraying a 500-times diluted solution of carbendazim WP or an 800-times diluted solution of thiophanate-methyl WP is effective. The frequency of spraying depends on the severity of the infection, but it is generally advised to spray every 10 days. For cases where the leaf spot is caused by root rot, affected plants should be carefully removed. Cut off the damaged foliage, clean the roots thoroughly, and remove any infected soil and rotten parts. Soak the roots in a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse them with water. Allow the roots to dry in the sun for 30 minutes, then place them in a cool area for two days. After drying, treat both the foliage and the potting soil with a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution for better disease control.
By combining proper cultural practices with timely chemical treatments, the occurrence and impact of cycad leaf spot can be significantly reduced, ensuring healthier and more vigorous plants.
