Morphological Characteristics:

Shrimp Flower is a small, evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 1–2 meters. The plant has a dense, bushy appearance with weak, highly branched stems. Its leaves are opposite, ovate or elliptical in shape, with a pointed tip (mucronate), and a wedge-shaped base. The leaves are entire, measuring 3–7 cm in length and 3 cm in width.

The inflorescence is a terminal spike, 6–15 cm long, which droops laterally. The bracts are red-brown and overlap, forming the main ornamental feature. The corolla is slender, white in color, and shaped like a lip, with three purple spots on the lower lip. The overall appearance of the flower cluster resembles a shrimp, hence its common name.

The flowering period is long, with blooms occurring throughout the year, but most abundant from April to May. Flowering decreases during the hot summer months.

Distribution:

Shrimp Flower is commonly cultivated for ornamental purposes. Wild populations can be found along the edges of warm, moist, and sunny forests in areas such as Wanzhou, Yuezhou, and Leizhou.

Origin and Growing Conditions:

Native to Mexico, it is now cultivated worldwide. It thrives in warm, humid, and well-lit environments with good air circulation. Ideal growth temperatures range around 25°C during summer and autumn, and 10–20°C during winter and spring, with a minimum temperature tolerance of 5°C. It is slightly shade-tolerant and has some cold resistance, making it suitable for outdoor cultivation in Nanjing during winter.

Soil should be rich in organic matter, loose, fertile, and well-drained.

Light: Shrimp Flower prefers moderate light intensity and can tolerate some shade. During summer, it benefits from partial shade to avoid intense sunlight.

Temperature: It thrives in warm conditions, and winter temperatures should not drop below 5°C. In Guangzhou, plants can survive without freezing.

Watering: The plant likes consistently moist soil during the growing season. In winter, water only when the top two-thirds of the soil has dried out.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced compound fertilizer once a month during the growing season.

Soil: Shrimp Flower prefers loamy soil rich in organic matter, which is loose, fertile, and well-draining.

Pruning: For newly planted seedlings in spring, topping is recommended to encourage branching and promote a full, bushy growth. After flowering, a short cut helps control plant height and stimulates new growth.

Propagation: Shrimp Flower is commonly propagated through stem cuttings. Cuttings of about 7–8 cm in length can be taken at any time of the year, but spring is the best season for propagation.

Garden Use:

In southern China, it can be grown outdoors in flower beds, along roadsides, and in tree-lined areas. It is also popular in pots, where it can be trained to climb. It is ideal for small to medium-sized containers and is considered an excellent climbing flowering plant.

Though the "Kirin" is a legend in Kyushu, the flower's form resembles a red orb being spit from a dragon's mouth, symbolizing strength and vitality. Its elegant, delicate blossoms, combined with soft, winding green stems and leaves that remain vibrant all year round, embody a sense of grace and spiritual elevation.

Kirin Tuzhu is elegant, mysterious, and warm. It has long been revered as a beautiful and meaningful flower in horticulture.
