Kiwi Fruit Garden Construction Techniques

Density: In the past, kiwi plantings were often too dense, making it difficult for farmers to manage the orchard. To improve efficiency and ease of operation, it's recommended to maintain a row spacing of approximately 4 meters. The distance between individual kiwi plants should be slightly narrower, typically around 2 meters, to allow for proper growth while still maintaining good air circulation and light penetration.

Planting: Some growers prefer digging trenches for planting, but this method can be labor-intensive and inefficient when it comes to applying farmyard manure. A better approach is to dig planting holes that are about 60 cm deep and 1 meter in diameter. Filling these pits with well-rotted organic fertilizer not only reduces the amount of fertilizer needed but also improves nutrient absorption by the tree roots. When planting, make sure to cover the pit with a layer of soil before placing the seedling to prevent root burn and promote healthy growth.

Grafting: It's common practice to use grafted seedlings, which are more resilient and have a higher survival rate. After grafting, it's advisable to wait one year before allowing the grafted part to grow freely. For now, it's recommended to graft Highward onto Hayward rootstocks. The graft union should be placed at least 40 cm above the ground to protect it from frost damage. Once the graft has successfully taken, all the shoots growing below the graft should be removed to prevent competition for nutrients and ensure the grafted part receives adequate energy for development.

Proper spacing, planting techniques, and grafting practices are essential for long-term kiwi orchard success. These methods not only improve tree health but also increase yield and make orchard management more efficient. By following these guidelines, growers can achieve better results and reduce the risk of future problems.
