Ruixiang, also known as "sleeping incense," Penglai purple, and the Merry tree, is a member of the Reishiaceae family. It is an evergreen shrub with clustered leaves that are typically oval or elongated in shape. This plant blooms in spring, producing flowers at the top in a head-like formation. The flowers lack a corolla, but they have a tube-like structure that resembles one. They emit a pleasant fragrance and come in shades of purple, pale purple, and white. Although not overly showy, their delicate beauty makes them unique. Native to China, Ruixiang has been cultivated for a long time. It thrives in warm, humid environments with partial shade and does not tolerate direct sunlight or overwatering. Propagation is commonly done through high-stem cutting or layering methods. Ruixiang holds significant ornamental value. While its individual flowers may be small, when they bloom in clusters, they create a visually appealing display. The plant's fragrance adds to its charm, making it a popular choice for gardens and indoor spaces. Additionally, the root of Ruixiang is sweet and salty in taste, non-toxic, and used in traditional medicine to treat acute laryngitis. The bark contains strong fibers that are ideal for papermaking, further enhancing its economic value. This plant is not only beautiful but also functional, offering both aesthetic and practical benefits. Whether grown for its fragrance, visual appeal, or utility, Ruixiang is a versatile and valuable addition to any garden or landscape.
