In the later stages, the infected areas develop a bluish discoloration, which is caused by the conidiophores and conidia of the pathogenic fungi.
The primary pathogens responsible for this disease are *Penicillium cyclopium* Westl. and *P. corymbiferum* Westl., both belonging to the genus *Penicillium* within the subphylum Ascomycota. These fungi are known to infect a variety of plants and can also cause decay in other organic materials. They thrive in moist environments, making them particularly problematic during the humid conditions often found in storage facilities.
To prevent the occurrence of this disease, it's important to follow similar management practices as those used for lily bulb soft rot. One effective method is to mix calcium chlorite powder (156 grams per 22.7 kilograms of soil) into the packing material during storage and transport. This helps to reduce fungal growth and prevent infection. Additionally, soaking the bulbs in a solution of benzene or a similar fungicide in warm water can also help inhibit the spread of the disease. Regular monitoring and maintaining proper ventilation and temperature control during storage are also crucial in preventing outbreaks.
