Strawberry is a perennial herb that requires significant nutrients from the soil to thrive. Proper fertilization is essential for its healthy growth and high yield. A solid base fertilizer is usually applied at the beginning of the growing season, typically around 5000 kg of organic manure combined with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to meet the plant's basic nutritional needs. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, additional top-dressing should be done based on the plant's development stages.
There are three key periods for top-dressing strawberries. The first is before flowering. In early Spring, when the plants start to grow, it’s important to provide adequate nutrients to support blooming. At this stage, applying about 10 kg of urea and 25 kg of superphosphate can help meet the nutritional demands for flowering.
The second period is after fruiting. Once the plant has produced a large number of fruits, it often experiences nutrient depletion. To restore its vitality, promote new leaf and root growth, and prepare for the formation of flower buds in Autumn, it’s recommended to apply 10–15 kg of urea, 15–20 kg of superphosphate, and 7.5–10 kg of potassium chloride.
The third critical time is during the bud differentiation phase. This is when the plant begins forming flower buds, so it's important to ensure proper nutrition to support both growth and bud development. During this time, the focus should be on phosphorus and potassium, with a smaller amount of nitrogen to avoid excessive vegetative growth.
These practices are based on modern agricultural techniques and are outlined in *Modern Fertilization Collection* by Zuo Guangsheng. Following these guidelines can significantly improve strawberry yield and quality while maintaining the health of the plants.
