Whenever possible, it's best to group lambs together for easier management and better feeding results. The choice of fattening method should depend on local conditions, including available land, feed resources, labor, and financial capacity. It is essential to select the most suitable and cost-effective approach based on the specific situation and economic factors in each region. When selecting lambs for fattening, their quality plays a crucial role in the success of the process. Healthy lambs with normal growth and development are ideal candidates. Lambs that are weaned at the end of lactation are often good choices, as they are more likely to adapt well to the fattening environment. Purchased lambs should ideally be weaned or in the process of weaning to ensure smooth transition and better health outcomes. To produce high-quality lambs for fattening, it's important to start from the late stages of pregnancy in ewes, so that lambs reach a weight of 20–30 kg by weaning, which lays a strong foundation for post-weaning growth. The timing of lamb fattening is also an important consideration. To maximize economic returns, it’s recommended to begin fattening in late spring or early summer, with the entire period taking place during the summer and autumn months. This allows lambs to take full advantage of the rich forage available during these seasons, reducing feeding costs and accelerating weight gain. Slaughtering around the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day periods ensures a wide market, higher prices, and better profitability. Before starting the fattening process, several preparatory steps must be taken. These include setting up necessary facilities like pens, feed equipment, and ensuring there is enough staff and funding. Lambs should be weaned and trained to eat solid feed, while also undergoing deworming, shearing, medicinal baths, and vaccinations. Proper training in grazing, feeding, and social behavior is also essential during this phase. Fattening management can be divided into three main phases. In the early stage, the focus is on monitoring whether lambs adapt well to the new environment, checking for any sick animals, and ensuring normal feed intake. Adjustments to feeding plans may be needed based on the lambs’ response. During the mid-phase, the amount of supplementary feed should increase, along with a higher proportion of protein-rich feeds, while maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. In the late phase, energy levels in the feed should be increased, and the protein content slightly reduced to improve meat quality. Feed quantities should be adjusted according to the weight of each lamb, following proper feeding guidelines to achieve optimal weight gain. Throughout all stages, it’s vital to monitor the health of the flock and track weight gain progress. Any changes in health or performance should prompt timely adjustments to the fattening strategy and management practices.
