Ornamental Medicinal Magnolia

Purple magnolia, also known as Magnolia, wooden pen, Xin Xin, Houtao, Fang Mu, and Yingchun, is sometimes confused with other species of the same genus in certain regions. According to the "Compendium of Materia Medica," it mentions that "the flowers are not shaped like small peaches and are covered with fine hairs, which is why they are called 'peach-like.' The wooden pen is the first to bloom in spring, and southerners refer to it as the 'spring flower.'" Magnolia belongs to the Magnoliaceae family and is typically a deciduous small tree or shrub. Its leaves are alternate, entire, and obovate in shape. The plant has stipules that are often persistent, with three outer sepals that are smaller and lanceolate, yellow-green in color, while the inner ones are larger, oblong, and oval, with a purple exterior and white interior. The name "magnolia" comes from the flower's distinctive appearance. Native to Hubei, it is widely cultivated across China for ornamental purposes. In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried buds are used as a medicinal herb, known as Xin Wen or Xin Xin. It is believed to help relieve symptoms such as colds, headaches, nasal congestion, and runny nose by clearing wind-cold and promoting nasal drainage.
