Reasons for Exclusion of Different Smoke in Diesel Engine and Its Elimination

Currently, in many regions, diesel engines remain the primary power source for agricultural machinery, irrigation systems, livestock operations, and processing equipment. When running normally, diesel engines may emit different colored smoke—black, white, or blue—which often signals underlying mechanical issues. If left unaddressed, these problems can lead to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, or even engine failure. It's essential to identify the cause of the smoke and take corrective action promptly.

Black smoke typically indicates that some diesel fuel is not fully combusted before being expelled. This can happen due to three main reasons: excessive fuel supply leading to overloading, low injection pressure causing poor atomization, or a delayed fuel delivery timing, especially when the engine is cold. To resolve this, reduce fuel supply if the engine is overloaded, repair or replace faulty injectors if the pressure is too low, and adjust the fuel injection timing to between 16–19 degrees with a corresponding amplitude of 22.50–28.50 mm. Ensure the engine temperature stays within the 80–90°C range during adjustment.

White smoke usually means that the diesel fuel isn’t burning completely. Common causes include a faulty injector with insufficient pressure, air or moisture in the fuel system, or a delayed fuel delivery similar to the black smoke issue. To fix this, inspect and adjust or replace the injectors, purge air from the fuel lines, and use clean, standard diesel. Also, check and adjust the fuel timing as you would for black smoke.

Blue smoke is a sign that the engine is burning oil, which can be caused by piston rings stuck in the opposite direction, an overfilled air filter oil reservoir, or excessive clearance between the valve stem and guide. To correct this, reposition the piston rings so their openings are staggered and not aligned with the piston pin or side pressure area. If the air filter oil level is too high, lower it below the ring groove height. For excessive valve clearance, replace the affected parts and ensure the gap between the valve stem and guide is within 0.05–0.12 mm.

Regular maintenance and timely troubleshooting are key to keeping diesel engines running efficiently and safely. Understanding the meaning behind the smoke can help prevent costly repairs and extend the life of the equipment.
