Reasons for Exclusion of Different Smoke in Diesel Engine and Its Elimination

Currently, in many regions, diesel engines remain a key power source for agricultural machinery, irrigation systems, livestock operations, and processing equipment. However, when these engines are running normally, they may emit different colored smoke—black, white, or blue. Such emissions are not just normal byproducts; they often signal underlying issues within the engine that require immediate attention to prevent further damage.

Black smoke is typically a sign that unburned diesel particles are being expelled from the engine. This can happen for three main reasons: first, if the engine is overloaded and receiving too much fuel; second, if the fuel injectors have low pressure, leading to poor atomization of the diesel; and third, if the fuel injection timing is too late, especially when the engine is cold. To address this, operators should reduce fuel supply if the engine is overworked, repair or replace faulty injectors to increase spray pressure, and adjust the fuel injection timing. When adjusting, loosen the two screws on the timing gear and rotate the camshaft clockwise to set the advance angle between 16–19 degrees, with a corresponding lift of 22.50–28.50 mm. The engine temperature should be maintained at around 80–90°C during the process.

White smoke usually indicates that the diesel fuel is not fully combusted before being expelled. Common causes include a stuck or faulty injector, excessive air in the fuel system, or high moisture content in the diesel. It can also occur due to late fuel injection, similar to black smoke. To fix this, check and repair or replace the injectors, purge air from the fuel lines, and use clean, standard diesel. Adjust the fuel injection timing using the same method as for black smoke to ensure proper combustion.

Blue smoke, on the other hand, suggests that the engine is burning oil. This can happen if the piston rings are worn or misaligned, allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber. Another cause is an overfilled air filter oil pan, which can lead to oil being drawn into the intake. Lastly, a large gap between the valve stem and guide may allow oil to seep in. To resolve this, realign the piston rings so their gaps are staggered and away from the piston pin area. If the air filter oil level is too high, reduce it below the ring groove height. For oversized valve stem gaps, replace the affected parts and reassemble to ensure a clearance of 0.05–0.12 mm.

Regular maintenance, timely adjustments, and proper fuel management are essential to keep the engine running smoothly and efficiently. Ignoring these signs can lead to more serious mechanical failures and costly repairs down the line.
