In adult grapevines, a condition known as "eye blinking" often occurs, characterized by the dormancy of buds in certain areas, preventing the emergence of new shoots. This issue weakens the overall vigor of the plant and makes it difficult for the vine to rejuvenate or recover effectively. The phenomenon causes confusion among growers, as the affected parts appear lifeless and fail to produce new growth.
The causes of "eye blinking" in grapevines are varied and often linked to improper cultivation practices. One common reason is excessive elongation of young shoots, which leads to underdeveloped buds and weak new growth. Additionally, if the vines are not properly managed—such as leaving branches too long or failing to prune them—the plants may struggle with nutrient distribution, leading to poor bud development and the appearance of "winking eyes."
Nutritional imbalances also play a key role. Overuse of nitrogen-rich fertilizers can result in weak, spindly growth and poor leaf function, making the plant more susceptible to this condition. On the other hand, insufficient fertilization or a lack of balanced nutrients can lead to similar issues. Another factor is excessive foliage or fruit load, which reduces light penetration and hinders proper shoot development, further contributing to the problem.
To manage "eye blinking," it's essential to understand its root causes and implement targeted solutions. During the early stages of growth, it's best to use organic fertilizers rather than overloading the plants with nitrogen. After harvest, applying organic matter in the fall helps replenish soil nutrients. In the first half of the growing season, especially during rainy periods, careful management of nitrogen application is crucial to avoid overstimulating vegetative growth.
Proper irrigation and drainage are also important, particularly in the late growth phase. From April to June, applying a solution of 0.3% urea and 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate every ten days supports healthy bud differentiation and fruit development. Adjusting the fruit load by pruning excess clusters and managing shoot density ensures better light exposure and more uniform bud development.
For weak shoots emerging from affected areas, it's advisable to keep only 2-3 nodes and allow them to develop into strong branches for future growth. If the shoots are too thick, pinching back the tips can help redirect energy toward producing quality fruiting wood. These practices not only help revive the affected areas but also promote long-term vine health and productivity.
