Why Is the Surface of the Fermentation Bed Constant for Many Years?
Fermented bed pig farming offers significant economic and ecological benefits. Due to its many advantages—such as environmental protection, health, energy efficiency, grain conservation, and reduced labor—it has gained popularity among European and American aquaculture industries and is now being widely promoted in China. The fermentation process typically occurs in the middle layer, where temperatures can reach 30–50°C or even higher. Many reports mention that the surface remains at a constant temperature for years, often stable around 20°C. But why is this the case? Take, for example, a pig-farming fermentation bed made using a starter culture similar to that used for goldfish. The thickness of the fermentation mattress material is generally about 50 cm. However, the top layer (about 10 cm) acts as a protective buffer and is not actively fermented or only slightly so. The core fermentation zone is usually located between 10 cm and 30 cm below the surface. Why is that? First, the surface has a large contact area with the outside environment. It's constantly exposed to air, leading to rapid convection and quick heat dissipation. This makes it difficult for the surface to retain heat. Second, pigs often urinate and defecate on the surface, which can lead to accumulation. When this happens, manual stirring and the pigs’ natural movement—like stepping and turning over—disrupt the fermentation process, preventing the surface from heating up effectively. Third, the structure of the bed is designed with proper ventilation in mind. Hot air rises, and cold air enters, creating a natural convection system that helps regulate temperature. As a result, the bed stays cool in summer rather than becoming sweltering. During hot weather, you can cover the bed with a shade net and install side curtains to enhance ventilation and cooling. Additionally, maintaining an appropriate pig density is crucial. For a goldfish-style fermentation bed, each pig should have about 1.2 to 1.5 square meters of space, with piglets allowed to be slightly more densely housed. This ensures good airflow and prevents overheating. In conclusion, the surface remains stable at around 20°C for long periods because of the unique design of the fermentation bed, which balances heat retention and dissipation while promoting efficient microbial activity below the surface. This creates a consistent, comfortable environment for the pigs and ensures long-term stability.Veterinary Black And White Ultrasound Diagnostic Equipment
