Peanut sweet peas

The peanut and sweet pea continuous cropping system is an advanced agricultural model developed by the Taixing Institute of Agriculture. This method involves planting peanuts from late May to mid-June, with harvesting taking place from late September to mid-October. Sweet peas are then sown in early November, and they are ready for harvest in the following spring, around mid-April to mid-May. In 2007–2008, Zhaozhuang Village, located at the border of Taixing City, implemented this model on 1,000 mu of land, successfully promoting its use across 3,500 mu in surrounding areas. The average yield of sweet pea pods reached 1,160 kg per mu, while peanuts yielded an average of 293 kg per mu. The annual production value per mu was approximately 4,276 yuan, with a net profit of 2,750 yuan per mu. **I. Peanut Cultivation** (1) **Fertilization in Selected Areas**: Choose high-lying, well-drained sandy or loamy soils. Apply 1,500–2,000 kg of high-quality ash manure, 40–50 kg of high-concentration compound fertilizer, and 5–6 kg of urea as base fertilizer per acre. After the seedlings emerge, apply 3–4 kg of urea per acre to promote growth. At the 6-leaf stage, spray 100 ml of Huimanfeng per acre or 5 kg of Chinese Sprayspray diluted in 50 kg of water. Repeat the spraying every other week for two applications. (2) **Selection of Improved Varieties**: Use locally adapted varieties such as Taihua No. 3, Taihua No. 4, and Taihua No. 5, which are suitable for fresh consumption, baking, and export. Before sowing, treat seeds with 0.03 g of ABT4 rooting powder, 50 g of 20% carbendazim WP, and 1–2 ml of 40% dimethoate, mixed with 1 kg of water. (3) **Narrow-Row Dense Planting**: Space rows 72–75 cm apart, with 18–19 cm between holes. Sow 9,000–10,000 holes per acre, placing 2–3 seeds per hole at a depth of 3 cm. (4) **Film Covering**: When covering the film, ensure it is tightly stretched and secured with soil every 50 cm. During planting, be careful to plant vertically to avoid heat damage to seedlings. (5) **Timely Growth Control**: Around 25–30 days after flowering, when the plants reach 33–35 cm in height and have 13 leaves, apply 40–50 g of 15% paclobutrazol wettable powder mixed with 50 kg of water. Spray mancozeb 30 days before harvest to prevent diseases. (6) **Pest and Weed Management**: Before covering the film, apply 100 ml of 72% metolachlor EC in 50 kg of water to control weeds. Ensure proper irrigation and drainage. (7) **Harvesting at the Right Time**: Harvest when the fruiting rate reaches 85%. **II. Sweet Pea Cultivation** (1) **Soil Preparation**: Prepare raised beds 10–15 cm high, 85–90 cm wide, with a central "turtle-like" ridge. Keep the pathways 60–65 cm wide. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging. (2) **Sowing Technique**: Use specialized varieties like Qizhen 76 and Taichung No. 13 for frozen export. Sow in mid-November (5–10th). Use a wide-narrow row system: 80–85 cm for wide rows, 65–70 cm for narrow rows. Plant 25–30 cm apart, with 3–4 seeds per hole at a depth of 4–5 cm. Aim for about 10,000 seedlings per acre. (3) **Vine Training**: When plants reach 20–30 cm, install support structures. Tie ropes every 1.5–2 meters along 50–60 cm lengths. Prune and arrange dense vines promptly to maintain air circulation. (4) **Fertilization and Irrigation**: Apply 2,000–3,000 kg of farmyard manure, 10 kg of 45% NPK fertilizer, and 8–10 kg of potassium sulfate as base fertilizer. Top-dress in three stages: during winter, apply diluted manure (1,000–1,500 kg/acre) for weak seedlings; after returning to young crops, apply 10 kg of 45% efficient compound fertilizer and 6–8 kg of urea. During harvest, use Hui Man Fung or 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate with trace elements. Maintain clear irrigation channels. (5) **Integrated Pest and Disease Control**: Prevent rodent damage before and after sowing. If new rat holes appear, plug them with aluminum phosphide. Treat powdery mildew with triadimefon and thiophanate methyl. Use chlorothalonil and Bordeaux mixture for brown spot and downy mildew. Control aphids with deltamethrin and leaf miners with Citaibao and Cajik. (6) **Timely Harvesting**: Harvest when pods are fully formed but grains are not yet mature to ensure high yield and quality.
