Peanut sweet peas

The peanut and sweet pea continuous cropping system is a highly efficient agricultural model developed by the Taixing Institute of Agriculture. This system involves planting peanuts from late May to mid-June, with harvesting taking place from late September to mid-October. Sweet peas are then sown in the following spring, typically between mid-April and mid-May, and harvested in early November. In 2007–2008, this model was tested on 1,000 mu in Zhaozhuang Village, a border town of Taixing City, and later expanded to cover 3,500 mu across surrounding villages. The average yield for sweet pea pods reached 1,160 kg per mu, while peanuts yielded an average of 293 kg per mu. The annual production value per mu was approximately 4,276 yuan, with a net profit of 2,750 yuan per mu. **I. Peanut Cultivation** (1) **Fertilization in selected areas**: Choose high, well-drained sandy or loamy soils. Apply 1,500–2,000 kg of high-quality ash manure, 40–50 kg of high-concentration compound fertilizer, and 5–6 kg of urea as base fertilizer per acre. After the seedlings emerge, apply 3–4 kg of urea per acre to promote growth. At the 6-leaf stage, spray 100 ml of Huimanfeng or 5 kg of Chinese Sprayspray diluted in 50 kg of water. Repeat every other week for two applications. (2) **Improved variety selection**: Use locally adapted varieties such as Taihua No. 3, Taihua No. 4, and Taihua No. 5, each suited for different uses—fresh consumption, baking, and export. Before sowing, treat seeds with 0.03g ABT4 rooting powder, 50g of 20% carbendazim WP, and 1–2ml of 40% dimethoate in 1kg of water. (3) **Narrow-row dense planting**: Plant in rows spaced 72–75 cm apart, with holes 18–19 cm apart. Sow 2–3 seeds per hole at a depth of 3 cm, resulting in about 9,000–10,000 holes per acre. (4) **Mulching**: Ensure the plastic film is tightly stretched and secured with soil every 50 cm. When planting, use vertical seeding to avoid heat damage to young plants. (5) **Timely control**: Spray 15% paclobutrazol wettable powder (40–50g per acre) mixed with 50kg of water when the plant height reaches 33–35 cm and has 13 leaves, around 25–30 days after flowering. Three weeks before harvest, spray mancozeb to prevent disease. (6) **Pest and weed management**: Pre-mulch with 100ml of 72% metolachlor EC in 50kg of water to control weeds. Maintain proper irrigation and drainage. (7) **Harvest timing**: Harvest when fruiting rate reaches 85%. **II. Sweet Pea Cultivation** (1) **Soil preparation**: Create raised beds 10–15 cm high, 85–90 cm wide, with a central ridge resembling a turtle’s back. Keep pathways 60–65 cm wide. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. (2) **Sowing technique**: Use varieties like Qizhen 76 and Taichung No. 13, suitable for freezing and export. Sow between November 5–10 using a wide-narrow row pattern: 80–85 cm for wide rows and 65–70 cm for narrow ones. Space holes 25–30 cm apart, placing 3–4 seeds per hole at a depth of 4–5 cm. Aim for about 10,000 seedlings per acre. (3) **Vine training**: When plants reach 20–30 cm, install stakes or ropes every 1.5–2 meters, spacing them 50–60 cm apart. Prune and arrange dense growth promptly to improve air circulation. (4) **Fertilizer and irrigation**: Apply 2,000–3,000 kg of farmyard manure and 10 kg of 45% NPK fertilizer plus 8–10 kg of potassium sulfate as base fertilizer. Top-dress in three stages: before winter, apply diluted manure 2–3 times (1,000–1,500 kg/acre). After returning to young crops, apply 10 kg of 45% compound fertilizer and 6–8 kg of urea per acre. During harvest, spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate along with trace elements like boron, manganese, and molybdenum. Keep irrigation channels clear. (5) **Integrated pest and disease control**: Prevent rodent damage by sealing new burrows with aluminum phosphide. Treat powdery mildew with triadimefon and thiophanate methyl. Use chlorothalonil and Bordeaux mixture for brown spot and downy mildew. Control aphids with deltamethrin and leaf miners with Citaibao and Cajik. (6) **Timely harvesting**: Pick pods when they are fully developed but not overripe to ensure quality and maximize yield.
